Gates's new book, "The Road Ahead" (the first book I have encountered that comes with its own technical support telephone hotline), the Windows-only CD-ROM that comes with it promised to connect me to the Internet's World Wide Web via a program called Microsoft Explorer. "For instance," the syndicated columnist and author Bill Gates wrote recently, "the Internet is becoming so important that Windows will only thrive if it is clearly the best way to gain access to the Internet." What will matter, if the computer industry's visionaries are to be believed, is how well the computer connects to the Internet.

All one really needs to know is that Windows 95 is an improvement over Windows 3.1 and that computers based on the Mac OS are still easier to set up and use than comparable computers based on Windows 95. The studies ought not to be taken too seriously, of course.
The results seem to contradict a similar study conducted several years ago, paid for and supervised by Apple Computer Inc., which concluded that Macintosh operating system (Mac OS) users were more productive, more accurate and of higher moral character than Windows users.
